Working to make Fairbanks the best it can be

I've been proud to call Fairbanks 'home' for more than 30 years now. One of the acitivities I enjoy most as your legislator is going door-to-door and talking to my neighbors and fellow citizens about the issues that are important to you. We're all in this together, working together, wanting the very best for our families, community, and state. It's just the way we do things in the Golden Heart City.

I love this community. There's none like it in Alaska, and I would even say there is none like it in the country. What makes it such a special place to live, work, learn and play is the people. I've served the good people of Fairbanks for three terms now, fighting the good fight for you and your families down in Juneau.

And I do it because this is my home. I've gone to school here, from Joy Elementary to Lathrop High and to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I've worked here, as a senior patient representative at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. I've served the people here, going back to 1999 when I was elected as the youngest  person ever to the Fairbanks City Council.

I live in the same house that I grew up in, a house that my parents purchased back in the 1960s when they were attending UAF. I enjoy all the many wonderful things that our community has to offer, from outdoor activities like fishing and hiking to local arts and cultural events and cheering loudly for the Alaska Nanooks at hockey games!

I was first elected to represent you in Juneau in 2007. Working with you over the last few years, I helped to bring millions of dollars of construction money to local neighborhoods, schools, and parks which had been neglected for decades. As a member of the Education Committee, I brought needed reforms to improve schools from Pre-K to UA student achievement. Last year, we were finally able to endow the Performance Scholarship to encourage high school students and reward them with tuition for higher education. I have been a budget hawk during my terms and ensured that we are saving first, spending wisely, and protecting our permament fund.

As a member of the House Resources Committee, I helped pass historic legislation to get a gasline moving forward. A gasline is still years away in construction to help with our current energy problems. I support renewable energy projects, conservation and home weatherization as a mid-term solution. We also must help families with the cost of energy through short-term solutions and sharing some the state's old wealth through a direct benefit plan or an energy voucher.

It has been an honor to serve you these last few terms. I look forward to serving you in the future, and continuing to work with you to make our home the best it can be.
